What is the Wages Protection System (WPS) in Qatar?
According to the Government Communication Center and the Ministry of Labour in Qatar, Wage Protection System is an electronic system that protects employees from exploitation by ensuring that employers pay their full salaries, as agreed upon in contracts, on time. It is applied to establishments, companies, and any institution subject to the Labour Law No. (14) of 2004. This system also aims to end the culture of paying salaries in cash and serves both Qatari and non-Qatari employees.

Employees: All individuals who have an official labour card and work in the private sector with an agreed-upon salary.
Employers: Investors or entrepreneurs who own a business or a company registered with competent ministries and authorities and who hire one or more employees based on agreed-upon salaries.
Banks: They are the financial institutions with which business owners have corporate bank accounts. The transfer of salaries through WPS to workers is completed through banks.
Which Companies Must Register for WPS?
As mentioned, all private sector companies that registered for the competent authorities must register for Wages Protection System (WPS) to be able to operate legally in Qatar. According to Qatar National Bank (QNB), there are three types of institutions exempted from this law, which are government entities, petroleum companies, and embassies.
As per the International Labour Organization, in January 2020, bans were imposed by the Wage Protection System Unit on 588 companies, and the number reached 8,756 companies in June of the same year.
WPS Registration Process in Qatar
Based on information provided by Qatar Islamic Bank, the requirements to register for the Wage Protection System include:
Valid Commercial Registration of the company
Valid Establishment ID of the company
Valid Trade License
Authorized signatory's Qatari ID
Corporate bank account
Excel salary file
International Bank Account Number (IBAN)
In addition, company mandoob information is required, which includes his name, mobile number, and Qatari ID.
In case the payer is different from the employer, the payer’s name, his Qatari ID/Establishment ID, and company e-mail will be required.
